AD: I workout for about an hour before I play, going through a lot of rudiments and practicing coordination between my hands and feet. RM: You've done quite a bit of recording. I like having a click track to work with, but I don't just play along with it for hours. That was in Dallas, Texas, because I got to a sound check and realized that people were lined up outside and I had half a voice. AD: Tone quality , more than anything else. They wanted to get on the road, and I said Well, lets just get the video done. So we got the When You Love A Woman video doneI was packing my whole left side in ice between takes. I sing with myself all the time I'm playing. I said, . The one thing that was good was that it allotted me some time to get some personal issues in order with myself. RM: Didn't you use Ludwigs with the Mothers? Because Id never met the singer, Id never met their drummer. I was part of a band that saved my life. **But do you think your drinking affected your relationships with the other guys in the band? _[laughs] _Okay? It felt so awesome, to see that song be used in that moment. Just a little bit east of the Musicians Institute. And so[sigh]Ive tried to maintain that thats just not what theyre for. I've been collecting material for it. We all put our lives and sweat and blood and tears into this thing. From all of it. So I just waited, knowing it was going to happen sometime. And then, yknow, after that, hes talking about not cracking the stone. Then I'll jump in and push him a little bit into other areas. I didnt want to leave the group, for Christs sake! RM: What set-up are you using these days? For in- stance, The Grand Wazoo was almost a jazz big-band record. And people didnt understand what that meant. So he said, "Well, If that's the case, I guess we don't need you in our organization." Craig hears drums more so than anybody else because he has a drum kit at home and he likes to fool around with it. It was a pretty heavy situation. **. For a while, I was doing too many studio gigs, and I couldn't wait to get on the road. I didnt jump into that. Then the band's ego got too much for me to cope with and I had to dump them.
